Hualien is a small east-coast city between the mountains and the Pacific, used by remote workers and surfers as a slower base with access to Taroko Gorge. Most rentals are in Hualien City itself or in neighbouring Ji'an township, with Qixingtan to the north on the pebble beach. Trains to Taipei take about two hours and there is a small domestic airport.
